The fire-resistant property of MgO board is one of its core advantages, stemming from its unique material composition, structural characteristics, and related performance. The specific aspects are as follows:


1. Material nature: Inorganic and non-flammable, blocking combustion at the source
   The main raw materials of gypsum board are magnesium oxide, magnesium chloride/magnesium sulfate, all of which are inorganic minerals and inherently non-flammable. The reinforcing materials added during the production process, such as plant fibers (such as straw, sawdust) or glass fibers, account for a small proportion and, when encapsulated in magnesium cement at high temperatures, will rapidly carbonize and will not continue to burn or act as a fuel.
   This composition based on inorganic materials distinguishes gypsum board fundamentally from organic combustible boards such as wood and plastic, and itself does not participate in combustion, laying the foundation for its fire-resistant performance.


2.Fire Performance: Zero Flame Spread & Ultra-Low Smoke Emission
Under ASTM E84 Standard Test Method (NFPA 701/UL1975 compliant), the magnesium oxide board demonstrates exceptional fire resistance:

 

The board exhibits no lateral flame propagation during the 10-minute test period. Its inorganic composition (MgO-MgCl₂ system) inherently resists ignition, achieving the highest flame spread rating (Class A per ASTM E84-23b). Even under direct flame exposure (≥1000℃), the surface only undergoes localized thermal degradation without forming a continuous flame front. This aligns with the "non-combustible materials" classification in building codes.
 

Smoke emission during high-temperature decomposition is minimal, with a smoke development index (SDI) of 0 and smoke density grade ≤15 (vs. ASTM E84's Class I requirement of ≤450). This meets the critical safety criteria for "low-smoke, toxicity-controlled" materials in public spaces (e.g., schools, hospitals).


3. Fire Resistance Limit: Meeting multiple scenarios based on thickness
The fire resistance limit (i.e., the time for the board to maintain integrity and insulation during a fire) is a key indicator for evaluating fire resistance performance. The fire resistance limit of MgO boards is closely related to their thickness:

  •  MgO board with a thickness of 3-6mm has a fire resistance limit of approximately 0.5-1 hour, suitable for decorative scenarios with lower fire resistance requirements;
  •  The board with a thickness of 8-12mm has a fire resistance limit of up to 1-2 hours, and can be used for basic fireproof areas such as ordinary partitions and ceilings;
  •  The thick board with a thickness of 15mm or more, when combined with reasonable installation techniques (such as sealed splicing and fixation with keels), can achieve a fire resistance limit of 2-4 hours, meeting the fire protection requirements of high-risk areas such as fire compartments and equipment rooms.


4. Resistance to Flame Penetration and Thermal Insulation
   The dense structure and inorganic components of MgO board make it have good thermal insulation properties. During a fire, even if the surface is affected by high temperature, the temperature inside the board rises slowly, effectively delaying the heat transfer to the other side and reducing the ignition risk to adjacent areas. At the same time, its resistance to deformation is strong, and it is not likely to fracture quickly under high temperature, maintaining structural integrity for a certain period of time and blocking the penetration of flames and high-temperature gases.

 

5. Compliant with fire safety standards and compatible with multiple domain regulations
   The fire resistance performance of MgO board has been tested by authoritative institutions and usually meets the A1 non-combustible material standard in GB 8624-2012 (the highest fire resistance level), fully meeting the fire protection design requirements for building walls, ceilings, partitions, etc. In addition, in scenarios such as industrial equipment protection and fire pipe encapsulation, it can also be compatible with relevant fire safety regulations, reducing fire hazards.
