The fire-resistant property of MgO board is one of its core advantages, stemming from its unique material composition, structural characteristics, and related performance. The specific aspects are as follows:
1. Inorganic & Non-Flammable Material (Stops Fire at the Source)
Our magnesium oxide (MgO) board is made entirely from inorganic, fireproof raw materials - mainly magnesium oxide, magnesium chloride and magnesium sulfate. None of these natural mineral ingredients can catch fire.
We add a small amount of reinforcing materials during production, like plant fibers (straw, wood chips) or glass fibers. Even when exposed to high heat, these fibers get fully sealed inside the magnesium cement matrix. They carbonize instantly instead of burning or fuelling flames.
Unlike flammable organic boards such as wood or plastic, our MgO board is completely non-combustible by nature. It never feeds or spreads fire, which is the core reason for its outstanding fire resistance.
2. Zero Flame Spread & Ultra-Low Smoke Release
Tested in strict compliance with the ASTM E84 standard (also meets NFPA 701 and UL1975 requirements), our MgO board delivers top-tier fire performance:
In the full 10-minute ASTM E84 test, the board produces zero lateral flame spread. Thanks to its stable inorganic MgO-MgCl₂ structure, it resists ignition completely and achieves the highest Class A flame spread rating per ASTM E84-23b. Even under direct exposure to 1000℃+ open flames, only minor local surface heat damage occurs, with no continuous flame formation. It fully qualifies as a non-combustible building material per official building codes.
It also generates extremely little smoke during high-temperature decomposition. It scores a 0 smoke development index (SDI) with a smoke density rating below 15 - far better than the Class I maximum limit of 450 set by ASTM E84. This makes it a perfect low-smoke, low-toxicity material for high-standard public spaces like schools and hospitals.
3. Customizable Fire Resistance Rating by Thickness for All Scenarios
Fire resistance rating refers to how long the board can stay intact and heat-insulating in a fire. For MgO boards, this performance directly depends on thickness, covering all common application scenarios:
- 3–6mm thickness: 0.5–1 hour fire resistance rating. Ideal for interior decoration areas with basic fire safety requirements.
- 8–12mm thickness: 1–2 hour fire resistance rating. Perfect for conventional wall partitions, ceilings and regular fireproof zones.
- 15mm+ thickness: 2–4 hour fire resistance rating. With professional installation (sealed joints + keel fixation), it satisfies strict fire protection standards for high-risk areas, including fire compartments and equipment rooms.

The board's dense, all-inorganic structure delivers great thermal insulation. In a fire, even when the surface is exposed to extreme high heat, the internal temperature rises very slowly. This effectively blocks heat transfer to the other side and prevents nearby materials from catching fire.
Besides, it boasts excellent high-temperature deformation resistance. It won't crack or break easily under intense heat, maintaining complete structural integrity for a long time to block flames and high-temperature gas penetration.
