Magnesium Oxide Board Fire Resistant Assembles

MgO Board Fire-Resistant Assemblies are high-performance, code-compliant systems that deliver superior fire protection, moisture resistance, and durability compared to traditional gypsum or cement board assemblies. Their success depends on system-level engineering, strict adherence to test-validated configurations, and proper installation—especially at joints and penetrations. For your next project, reference ICC-ESR or EN 1363-1 test reports to select the right assembly for your fire rating and application needs. Our MgO Fire Resistant Flooring board achieves threefold breakthroughs in fire resistance, structural performance, and environmental protection through inorganic mineral components (magnesium oxide, magnesium chloride/magnesium sulfate) and glass fiber reinforced structures. It is currently the preferred fireproof flooring material for high-safety scenarios such as public places and industrial plants.

Product Introduction

Magnesium Oxide Board Fire Resistant Assembles

Magnesium Oxide (MgO) board fire-resistant assemblies are basically a specially designed, non-combustible building system. To put it simply, they combine MgO boards with framing, insulation materials, joint treatments, and finishing components, aiming to provide verified fire resistance for walls, ceilings, shafts, and fire barriers-specifically including three aspects: integrity, insulation, and load-bearing capacity. These assemblies have clear system-level fire test ratings, such as being able to withstand fire for 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, or even more than 120 minutes. They also comply with relevant international standards, like EN 13501-1 (Class A1), ASTM E136, and ICC-ESR. That's why they're particularly crucial in projects with high fire risks and strict building code requirements.

MgO Board: It's an inorganic composite panel, mainly composed of magnesium oxide, magnesium chloride/magnesium sulfate, glass fiber mesh, and mineral fillers. It's inherently non-combustible, with a melting point of about 2800 degrees Celsius, so it has extremely strong high-temperature resistance.

Fire-Resistant Assembly: It's not just a single panel, but a complete set of systems-including all components like MgO boards, framing, joints, and sealants. It needs to be tested as a whole to meet the fire resistance requirements specified in the ASTM E119/EN 1363-1 standards, which are the three aspects mentioned earlier: integrity, insulation, and load-bearing capacity.

Fire Resistance Rating (FRR): Simply put, it's how long the assembly can withstand fire while maintaining integrity, insulation, and load-bearing capacity. For example, a 60-minute rating means it can withstand fire for 60 minutes and meet all three requirements at the same time.

Why are MgO fire-resistant assemblies so excellent?

First, the ceramization property: When the temperature reaches 800 to 1200 degrees Celsius, the MgO board will form a dense, non-flaking ceramic layer, which can effectively block the transmission of oxygen and heat, preventing the fire and high temperature from spreading further.

Second, the endothermic cooling effect: The magnesium hydroxide in the MgO board releases water vapor when heated, which can reduce the temperature on the back of the board, playing a role in cooling and delaying the spread of the fire.

Third, the advantage of low toxicity and low smoke: It meets the Class A1 non-combustible standard, producing very little smoke when burned (smoke density index ≤ 450), and the fumes generated are non-toxic (toxicity index ≤ 0.5). This is particularly important for personnel evacuation in the event of a fire.

Finally, strong structural stability: Even in high-temperature environments up to 1200 degrees Celsius, it can maintain its own strength, not melt or drip, and can keep structural stability all the time.

Common Assembly Types & Typical Configurations

Assemblies are categorized by application and FRR. Below are engineered, test-validated configurations (adjust per project specs and local codes).

Target FRR: 60–120 min (E60 I60 R60 to E120 I120 R120)

Framing: 60×200×1.5 mm galvanized steel studs (400/600 mm centers); 0.8 mm track

MgO Boards: 12 mm (1hr) / 15 mm (2hr) A1 MgO (fiberglass-reinforced); 2 layers per side (staggered joints)

Cavity: Mineral wool insulation (100–150 mm, density ≥ 100 kg/m³; non-combustible)

Joints: Intumescent sealant (≥ 12 mm width) at panel edges; self-adhesive glass fiber tape + MgO joint compound

Fasteners: Galvanized screws (35–45 mm length); 150 mm spacing at edges, 300 mm in field

Finish: Fire-rated primer + intumescent paint (optional for extra FRR)

2. Non-Load-Bearing Partition (Wood Stud, Fire-Rated)

Target FRR: 30–60 min (E30 I30 to E60 I60)

Framing: 50×100 mm treated wood studs (400 mm centers); fire-retardant coating

MgO Boards: 9–12 mm A1 MgO (1 layer per side for 30 min; 2 layers for 60 min)

Cavity: Fire-retardant mineral wool (80 mm)

Joints: Fire-rated acrylic sealant + glass fiber tape

Fasteners: Zinc-plated screws (30–35 mm); 120 mm edge spacing

3. Fire-Rated Ceiling (Suspended)

Target FRR: 30–60 min (E30 I30 to E60 I60)

Grid: Galvanized steel main tees (600 mm centers) + cross tees (600×600 mm)

MgO Boards: 12 mm A1 MgO lay-in panels (tongue-and-groove edges)

Above Ceiling: Mineral wool insulation (100 mm) between joists; fire dampers at duct penetrations

Penetrations: Intumescent collars for pipes/cables; fire-rated sealant for gaps

4. Shaft Wall (Elevator/Stairwell) – High FRR

Target FRR: 120–240 min (E120 I120 to E240 I240)

Framing: 75×200×2.0 mm steel studs (400 mm centers); double tracks top/bottom

MgO Boards: 15–18 mm A1 MgO (3 layers per side; staggered joints)

Cavity: Dense mineral wool (150 mm, ≥ 120 kg/m³)

Joints: Intumescent sealant + metal edge trim; welded stud connections

Penetrations: Fire-rated shaft collars; smoke seals at elevator doors

Critical Design & Installation Best Practices (Avoid Common Failures)

System-Level Thinking: FRR depends on the entire assembly, not just the board. Reference ICC-ESR or EN 1363-1 test reports for exact configurations.

Joints & Penetrations: 80% of fire failures occur here. Use:

Intumescent sealant for panel edges, stud gaps, and penetrations (pipes, cables).

Staggered joints (≥ 200 mm offset) for multi-layer assemblies.

Fire-rated collars/ sleeves for all service penetrations.

Fastening: Follow screw spacing strictly (150 mm edges / 300 mm field) to prevent delamination under heat.

Insulation: Use only non-combustible insulation (mineral wool, ceramic fiber) in cavities. Avoid foam plastics (combustible).

Exterior Use: Protect MgO boards with a water-resistive barrier (WRB) and UV-resistant finish (per IBC Section 1402.2).

Quality Control: Require third-party test reports (not just board-level certificates) and on-site inspections for joint integrity.
