The exceptional moisture resistance of MGO tile backer boards stems from its scientific inorganic formulation and structural design, eliminating the risk of water absorption, swelling, or mold growth:
1. Key Raw Materials
High-Purity Magnesium Oxide (MgO): Acts as the core cementitious component, reacting with magnesium sulfate to form a dense, water-insoluble magnesium oxysulfate hydrate crystal structure-impermeable to moisture.
Magnesium Sulfate Solution: Replaces traditional magnesium chloride as the curing agent, avoiding "efflorescence" (white salt deposits) and chloride ion corrosion, while enhancing water resistance.
Reinforced Fibers: Chopped glass fiber or kraft paper fiber is evenly distributed to improve tensile strength and crack resistance, preventing structural damage caused by moisture-induced expansion.
Moisture-Resistant Additives: Special water-repellent agents and mold inhibitors are integrated to reduce water absorption and inhibit the growth of mold, mildew, and bacteria.
Dense Inorganic Matrix: No organic components (e.g., wood fibers, formaldehyde-based binders) that absorb moisture or decompose in humid environments.
2. Moisture-Proof Working Principle
Dense Crystal Structure: The magnesium oxysulfate hydrate crystals form a tight, non-porous matrix that blocks water penetration-unlike porous cement or gypsum boards that absorb moisture over time.
Low Water Absorption: The board's water absorption rate is ≤ 15% (ASTM C1396 standard), and it does not swell, warp, or soften even when exposed to prolonged humidity or direct water splashes.
Mold-Proof Inorganic Composition: Mold and bacteria cannot survive on inorganic surfaces, eliminating the musty odors and health hazards associated with organic-based backer boards.
